If you already know you want to create information products but you’re not sure where to start, this post is for you.
Determining what content you want to distribute is covered in our Content Creation Guide post.
This is a guide for the steps you need to take to make money from your expertise and experience. It’s easier than you think – first you need a list and an offer, then you need a way to reach prospects and convert them into paying customers.
A lead magnet is an incentive you offer to get people to sign up for your list.
Check out this example from our Website, primeconcepts.com. Right at the top of the page, there’s an offer to get a marketing audit. By filling out the form, you’re also added to our contact list so we can offer you other services that may be of interest and value to you.
Here are six ways to produce a lead magnet with little money or technical skill:
Tip: Re-purpose your content into different formats. Transcribe your blog post into a video script. Edit your article down to blog post size. You get the idea.
Articles range from 600-2000 words, but 1500 is about average. These are print pieces, and they include things like white papers and special reports.
YOU can become a published author! Kindle makes it easy to create eBooks – just expand on your article content, or combine several articles.
Record yourself reading your eBook and add slides to enhance it. VideoScribe is an easy-to-use tool for making great videos.
Create CDs and/or MP3s of your articles and eBooks. Not comfortable recording your own voice? Ask a friend to read for you.
With only 600-900 words, it’s important to limit each blog post to one complete idea. Don’t forget to include a photo, infographic, or video. Need an example? You’re reading one right now!
Online learning is cost-effective and easily accessible. Just create a series of videos (see above), and use auto responders to send each video in the course over a period of time.
2. Distribute Content
Once you’ve created content, it’s time to get the word out. After all, people can’t buy something if they don’t know it exists.
Social media is a free and easy way to build your contact list and promote your products. Create posts about how your lead magnet solves a problem or need, and include the link to your landing page. (We’ll come back to that in a minute.)
But don’t just promote yourself – sharing relevant posts and articles adds to your credibility. This makes it more likely that someone will buy into your solution.
3. Convert Leads
This is where the landing page comes in. Having an online presence builds trust and credibility, but there’s no need to set up an entire Website.
A landing page is a single Web page you can use to promote your ideas and products. Visitors enter their contact info to get your lead magnet, and opt-in to receive more offers from you. With LeadPages, you can set this up in five minutes or less!
Auto responders will follow up on these contacts with emails at scheduled intervals. You set up the sequence one time, and then emails are sent automatically. An email marketing service like Aweber makes it easy to do, and also makes it easy to manage your contact list.
